In our world spanish is spoken in three countries.  The biggest, Mexico, the second biggest The United States and last Spain.  How does it feel that The United States has more Spanish speakers than Spain? Its crazy Huh?  I think that Spanish is a very important language to learn.  We have 35 million spanish speakers in the United States.  We can use it every day and our job oppurtunities really open up when you know two languages.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

We celebrated Dia De Los Muertos by either making a sugar skull, creating a paper skeleton or calacas which is a skeleton made out of clay and painted.  I made a Calaca!  Here it is...

QUINCENERA

With our Celebration project we all just found a Spanish celebration to research...this is mine...
In the Spanish Culture they celebrate 15th birthdays like we celebrate 16.  It is mainly celebrated in Mexico, Venezuela, Dominic Republic, and Cuba.  In each country they are celebrated differently.
In Mexico they celebrate by making the girl feel like a princess. They get their makeup, nails and hair all done for the occasion. Dresses are brought prior the party.  The dresses were originally white or light pink to show unity and purity.  Now a days the dresses can be any color.  The young girl only has a party if they are Catholic.  They start out with a Thanksgiving Mass.  She is accompanied by her parents, grandparents, and chamberlains.  She is awarded with  a necklace or pendant of  the Virgin Guadalupe and a tiara.  The girl is required to place a bouquet of flowers under the alter of the Virgin Mary.  After Mass the birthday girl receives presents and dances with the Chamberlains.  They usually practice a Waltz beforehand and have it recited.  A passage the girl makes is letting her father change her shoes on her feet from flats or low heals to high heels.  There is a special dinner and band playing while the guests mingle and dance! The next morning the close family have a special breakfast to close up the big day.
In Venezuela the quince is filled with mostly dancing.  The father arrives with the young girl first and gives her away to the mother and other family at the party.  The father and daughter dance a very special Waltz and other tunes.  Then she dances with her brothers,  uncles or godparents.  The birthday girl and her Chamberlains perform a dance to their choice of music.  All of the guests wear formal wear and the girl wears a pastel dress with jewelry around her neck and hands.  She is also given a tiara.  There is always lots of food and things to drink and later in the night the alcohol gets brought out.
In the Dominican Republic they celebrate it like it is another year to live.  It starts off in a Catholic Church wear they pray and give thanks then moves on to a night club, ballroom or the house of the girl.  She is accompanied by 14 close friends and they all dress very nice and match the young girl.  She wears a fancy pastel dress.  She usually has a date which dances the first dance with her and then gives her back to her father.  The Quince girl and her couples usually perform practiced dances.  The cake is the most extravagant part of the whole party.  It is usually a few layers and decorated with bright colors and amazing designs.  The cake and food is served shortly after the dancing and gift bags or party favors are passed out at the exit.
Cuba is the last but not least Spanish Speaking Country that celebrates Quinceañera’s.  The birthday girl has 16 couples that run the party with her.  They usually have a choreographed dance to do.  She also Waltz’s with the man of her choice which is usually a boyfriend or close friend.  The males usually wear colorful tuxes.  This celebration came from Spain and then was brought to Cuba in the late 70’s but first was from France.  In Cuba the Quince’s are only celebrated by the wealthy and only very special people are invited.
